OUR ANIMALS

Jungle Encounters is continuously expanding its family of animals. All of the money raised by doing shows and all of the donations received, are given right back to the animals in the form of bedding, grain, food, enrichment and housing. Fennec Fox: We have 2 African Fennec Fox, Sapphire and Digger. Sapphire was born June 02 and Digger was born May 04. They are very curious, but cautious animals. These pint-size bundles are always very popular at our shows!

Fennec Fox Background: Fennec Fox are the smallest of all the fox. Their status in the wild is unconfirmed. They are omnivores who eat birds, insects, lizards and fruits. They live in colonies of up to 10 and sleep in underground dens. They are 10-16" long and live an average of 8 years in the wild. They weigh 2-4 pounds. They are very high-strung and skiddish animals.

Ringtail Cat: We have a Ringtail Cat, Bandit. He was born May 04. He is a very curious animal and very acrobatic.

Ringtail Cat Background: Ringtail Cats are in the Raccoon family and they behave much like our raccoons here in New England. They live from Texas through Mexico. They eat just about anything, but prefer meat (rodents, birds, etc). Their body is 12" long, their tail another 8". They weigh 2-5 pounds. They live up to 15 years in captivity.

Savannah Cat: We have an F2 Savannah Cat, Hunter. He was born April 05. He is a very friendly and playful animal. His beautiful spots make him one of our most popular animals!

Savannah Cat Background: Savannah Cats are a cross between an African Serval and a domestic cat. People started cross-breeding these 2 animals so we could have a wild-looking cat with a domestic cat personality. They live 12-15 years and weigh up to 20 pounds.

Striped Skunk: We have a brown striped skunk named Shadow. He was born May 06. He is a very curious and playful animal who loves to explore. Invite our skunk to your event and you might find yourself wanting to cuddle him!

Striped Skunk Background: Striped skunks live throughout the US. They are in the Mustelid family which includes weasels and ferrets. They are omnivores who love to eat bugs, grass and seeds. Their body averages 12-18" long and their average weight is 10-13 pounds. They live up to 10 years in the wild.

Marmoset: We have a Marmoset, PJ. He was born Sep 07. He is a very curious primate who loves to sleep snuggled up in his blankets when he's not exploring his enclosure. If you like primates, you will be mesmorized by how human-like he is!

Marmoset Background: Marmosets are one of the smallest primates in the world. They are omnivores who live in colonies in the rainforests of Brazil. The fathers carry the babies on their backs to care for them. Their bodies are 6-8" long and their tails are even longer! They weigh up to 1lb and they live up to 15 yrs.

Patagonian Cavy: We have 2 Patagonian Cavies, Mara and Levi. Mara was born June 03 and Levi was born Mar 07. They are very curious animals who make lots of grunts and groans when they talk. You will be drawn in, like everyone else, by this unusual looking animal!

Patagonian Cavy Background: Patagonian cavies are the second largest rodent in the world. They live in South America and eat mainly grasses and seeds. They are commonly hunted by other animals. Their body is 15-18" long and they weigh 20-25 pounds. They live up to 10 years in captivity.

American Alligator: We have an american alligator, Bruno. He was born Jan 06. He enjoys swimming in his pool and basking under his heat lamp. This prehistoric-looking reptile is always a crowd pleaser!

American Alligator Background: American alligators live in the southern US. The first few years of their life they grow an average of 1 foot per year. They can grow up to 15 feet long. They are carnivores who eat most types of animals living in their area. They can live 50-60 years.

Bengal Cat: We have an F5 Bengal Cat, Safari. He was born Sep 06. He looks like a mini-leopard and is loved by everyone!

Bengal Cat Background: Bengal cats are a cross between an Asian Leopard Cat and a domestic cat. People started cross breeding these 2 animals back in the 1960s so we could have a wild-looking cat with a domestic cat personality. They live 12-15 years and weigh up to 20 pounds.

Cotton-Top Tamarin: We have a Cotton-Top Tamarin, Spike. He was born Sep 07. He is a very curious primate who loves to chirp like a bird as he bounces around his house playing. When he's full grown his cottontop head will arouse your curiosity!

Cotton-Top Tamarin Background: Cotton Tops are an endangered small new world primate. They are similar to humans in many ways, which tends to peak the interest of people. They are omnivores who live in colonies in the rainforests of Columbia. Their bodies are 10-12" long and their tails are even longer! They weigh 1-1.5lbs and they live up to 15 yrs.

African Hedgehog: We have 3 hedgehogs, Buddy, Kiwi and Kokonut. Buddy was born Apr 01, Kiwi & Kokonut were born Dec 06. How can you say no to this adorable face?

African Hedgehog Background: There are 16 species of hedgehogs and they live in Africa and Europe. They live in a variety of habitats ranging from deserts to forests and they eat mainly insects. They are 4-6" long and live up to 7 years.

Blue Tongued Skink: We have a Blue Tongued Skink, Blue. He was born May 02. He is a reptile that loves to hang out under his leaves in his cage. Love reptiles? Then you'll love to feel his smooth scales!

Blue Tongued Skink Background: Blue Tongued Skinks ar reptiles in the Skink family. They live in a variety of habitats in Australia, rainging from grasslands to rainforests to deserts. They eat insects, worms, flowers and berries. They can grow up to 23" long and live up to 20 years.

Mini-lop Rabbit: We have 2 mini-lops, Spices & Cadbury. They were born Mar '08. They love to hop around their cage and play with their toys. You can enjoy our fluffy and extremely friendly bunnies at your next event!

African Millipede: We have 4 millipedes that were donated to us in Jun 05. They enjoy patrolling their habitat every night looking for things to eat. Love bugs? Even if you don't, you'll be intrigued by their hundreds of legs!

African Millipede Background: There are approximately 6,500 species of millipedes, the African Millipede being one of the largest. They can grow up to 12" long and can have up to 500 legs. They clean the forest floors by eating decaying plants and leaves. They can live up to 7 years.

Ferret: We have 3 ferrets, Sage, Jesse and Summer. Two of them were donated to us. They are all friendly and very curious animals. You'll laugh at how playful and fun our ferrets are.

Ferret Background: Black-footed ferrets are in the Mustelid family which also includes weasels and skunks. They are carnivores who mainly prey on prairie dogs and mice. They are 15-16" long and live an average of 5 years in the wild. They weigh 1-3 pounds.

Ornate Horned Frog: We have a frog, Cosmo. He was born Jul 06. He is an albino frog, so his colors aren't the same as regular ornate frogs. He loves to hop around in his pool and soak up the water. He always makes people laugh as he hops around!

Ornate Horned Frog Background: Frogs are amphibians. Amphibians usually drink water by absorbing it through their skin. They eat mainly insects and small fish. They are 5-9" long and wide, and can live up to 10 years in captivity. They can weigh up to 1 pound!

Chinchilla: We have 4 chinchillas, Sasha, Velvet, Dusty and Whiskers. Sasha was born Apr 96, Velvet was born Mar 04, Dusty & Whiskers were born Mar 07. They are friendly animals, but prefer to keep to themselves. You'll be amazed at how soft their fur really is!

Chinchilla Background: Chinchillas are in the Rodent family. They are endangered in the wild, but common as pets. They live in large colonies along the mountainsides of South America. They eat mainly grass and leaves. They are 5-7" long and live an average of 5 years in the wild.

Hissing Cockroach: We have 4 hissing cockroaches. They are easy animals to take care of. They love to hang out in their eggcarton in their cage. You' be amazed at the sound they make!

Hissing Cockroach Background: Hissing cockroaches are in the cockroach family. They live in Madagascar on the ground underneath fallen leaves and logs. They eat decaying matter on the ground. They are 1-2" long and live an average of 1-2 years in the wild.
